Chapter Thirteen

Agent Elizabeth Katherine “Kate” Cordova wasn’t smiling, which wasn’t at all usual. She was one of those people who are everlastingly in good spirits, to the puzzlement, and enjoyment, of everyone they meet. Today was one of those rare days when Kate was in a foul mood. Two phone calls had done this.

The first was from David Harrowsen, both lively and perplexing at the same time. The teasing and banter between them was ceaseless, given their association of fifteen years. Short and stout with thick, beautiful ebony hair, round ruddy cheeks and a wide mouth, Kate Cordova possessed a steely, probing mind, boundless energy, and a genuine affection for David and Tee.

When she heard David’s voice, her smile and her voice noticeably brightened.

“Hey Sarge, what ya doin’?” she chirped.

“Oh, just enjoying the summer sports in bustling Rye, Colorado. I knew you’d be asleep at your desk, just thought I’d give you a wake-up call.”

“Yeah, that’s me, the devoted state employee!”

“Katie, I know you’re busy, but I need you to do something.”

David’s criptic request puzzled her, but she knew it must be important.

As David’s partner for the last seven years, she’d shared in some of his most fascinating and dangerous cases, and knew him as well as anyone. His reassignment to desk duty had deeply angered her. But, one had to move on. Nevertheless, the opportunity to work with David again, even long distance, was exciting as well as puzzling. Whatever was going on down in Rye (where the hell is Rye?) it rated David interrupting his sacrosanct time off. The real clue, however, was that he’d called her Katie: that meant something very important.

It was a habit born out of a situation many years previous.

Kate Cordova had been brand new to CBI when she was assigned to work with David. She’d sized him up quickly and decided she didn’t like him. David had little time, or use, for rookies, and said so. He was aloof and self-possessed with a hint of arrogance, and his public rebukes of Kate’s rookie mistakes offended her deeply. As one of CBI’s first female agents, Hispanic as well, Kate could have easily “played the minority thing” as she put it, and gotten any assignment she’d wanted. However, she was determined to make it on her merits; proud and stubborn, she resolved to stick it out. She shrugged off David’s caustic comments, even when he teasingly called her Katie, a childhood nickname she loathed. Gradually, David began to recognize the burgeoning talent of his new partner, even if he couldn’t bring himself to acknowledge it openly. Still, their relationship was not what one would call ideal. Until the Ron Ramsey incident.

Ron Ramsey was a con man. He made his trade by bilking women out of money. With the professional criminal’s acumen for sizing up personalities, Ramsey had bragged that he could pick a victim just by looking at her picture. Tragically for a good many females across the Western U.S., he was right.

David had an informant who knew Ramsey and was willing to make an introduction.
